Senate legal panel endorses draft elections law
AMMAN — The Senate Legal Affairs Committee on Saturday endorsed the 2012 draft elections law as referred by the Lower House. Senators are scheduled to begin deliberations over the bill on Sunday before the end of the Parliament’s current ordinary session on June 25.
In its current form, the draft law gives each voter two votes: one for a candidate at the district level and another for a closed proportional list that will compete for 17 seats at the national level.
The Lower House will consist of 140 seats, of which 108 seats will be allocated for the 45 constituencies of the Kingdom’s 12 governorates and the three badia regions and 15 seats for the women’s quota in addition to the 17 seats allocated for the party lists.
